Lorena Wiebes secured another podium finish in Brugge-De Panne. As expected, the race was decided in De Moeren, where the European champion was attentive at the front. Wiebes was isolated though, which meant she could not respond to every attack. Pfeiffer Georgi chose the right moment and won solo, Wiebes sprinted to third place. "I was too eager and started too early, but the form is good and that gives motivation for Gent-Wevelgem," she said.
Brugge-De Panne is special for Lorena Wiebes. It was her very first World Tour race ever in the elite and as a 19-year-old she immediately signed for fourth place. Since then, she has competed for the win almost every year. "This is one of the few real sprinters' races. Maybe it will be the first real showdown with Charlotte Kool and Elisa Balsamo. I hope to win here, because this race was marked on my calendar in advance," Wiebes said.
With three victories and eight podium places, Team SD Worx had a strong first racing month. Bruges-De Panne offers a new opportunity for the number one team in the WorldTour ranking. The squad hopes for wind, but with Lotte Kopecky and Lonneke Uneken they also have fast legs for the sprint. "We have a strong selection at the start. It would be nice to have windy conditions, but even without we will be competing for the podium," said sports manager Danny Stam.
