‘There is no better feeling than winning a race"

11/10/2024

In the fourth stage of the Simac Ladies Tour, Barbara Guarischi managed to win the sprint of the breakaway ahead of Ally Wollaston. She thus picks up her first WorldTour win in nine years. ‘This is amazing. I didn't expect to ever take another win at the highest level again and then it happens. Winning is the very best feeling there is.’

Barbara Guarischi: ‘I didn't expect to win today. This morning I said in the meeting that this would be the day we would have to chase all day to enable the sprint for Lorena Wiebes. After about 60-70 kilometres, a breakaway was formed and we only had Femke Markus in there. Whereupon I had to make a big effort to make the connection. When I was in the group, the pace was already really high. We were away with a large number of riders, so I immediately realised that there was a good chance that this breakaway would make it to the end. So I communicated in the radio that it was best for our team to start a chase as soon as possible, so that the difference with a view to the general classification would not become too big.’

‘Behind us, my teammates didn't get any assistance in the chase. Fortunately, they still got the gap a lot smaller. From the car we got the signal that my card was drawn and then I did get a bit nervous. I'm not used to sprinting for myself anymore. I also thought it wouldn't happen again that I would win a sprint at WorldTour level. But I'm super happy I was able to finish it off.’

‘I knew Ally Wollaston was faster than me, so I had to be smart. She was in my wheel in the last 500 metres. If I started the sprint, she would pass me at double speed. So I waited as long as possible to make her nervous and lure her out of her stall. When she went on, I followed into her wheel to time it right and get out at the right time. This is great. I'm incredibly happy with this win. But you can count on it: tomorrow I will work full again to hopefully help Team SD Worx-Protime to stage wins & the GC victory with Lorena Wiebes and Lotte Kopecky.’
