Christian Kos strengthens technical staff of Team SD Worx-Protime as sports director

‘Talent development is becoming more and more important’

With Christian Kos, Team SD Worx-Protime brings in an experienced man in talent development. The North Dutchman previously worked at AG Insurance-Soudal as a team manager and found a new challenge at Team SD Worx-Protime. "I was a rider until 2019 and did not reach the highest level myself, so I know what young riders are up against. I work very meticulously and try to continuously strive for improvement. I hope to keep Team SD Worx-Protime at the top,’ Kos said.

Christian Kos is a son of former stage and track world champion René Kos and thus grew up in cycling. For almost three years, he was sports director at AG Insurance - Soudal. Sports manager Danny Stam: ‘Christian has always been busy supporting young talents. He contacts me regularly and also alerted me to the qualities of Julia Kopecky. His strength is that he gets on very well with young talents and has the patience to work closely with them. Furthermore, he works very meticulously and will provide structure to the sporting staff in the team.’

Christian Kos: ‘In recent years at AG-Insurance Soudal, I was mainly responsible for the development teams. We did a good job. Several riders made the step to WorldTour teams. Now you may think: what are the interfaces between talent development and a job as a sports director with the best team in the world? Every human being develops every day. Even Lotte Kopecky and the other top riders are not yet fully developed, mind you.’

‘I think the different backgrounds of the sports directors within the team can be reinforcing. For example, I am convinced that if Team SD Worx-Protime wants to remain the number one team in the coming years too, the key lies in talent development. In the past three seasons, this team had the best riders in its ranks, of course also precisely because they had often taken extra steps at Team SD Worx-Protime. But now that the sport is growing, the level is broadening and several teams are vying for the same top riders, it is important that the influx from below remains guaranteed. That's where I can play off my qualities.’

‘The picture Danny Stam outlined to me in the contract negotiations matches my qualities. I insist that everything is clear for the riders. I work very organised, am calm, timid and observant. I always let someone tell their story and then try to support where I can. There is an open communication style in this team. The Simac Ladies Tour will already be my first race for Team SD Worx-Protime this year. I hope to learn there how the way of working is now and how we can combine the best of both worlds towards the future,’ Kos concludes.
