Double victory in La Vuelta Femenina

Double victory in La Vuelta Femenina

Demi Vollering also grabs leader's jersey with first win of the season

The first win of the season earned Demi Vollering an immediate double. With the stage victory at the first uphill finish in La Vuelta Femenina, the Dutch champion also immediately took the leader's jersey. With over half a minute's lead, the Team SD Worx - Protime leader is immediately in pole position for the overall victory in the Spanish Grand Tour.

With three podium finishes in the Ardennes classics, Vollering had already shown in recent weeks that she was in top form. Only the victory was still missing this season. In La Vuelta Femenina, the Dutch rider started with only one goal: overall victory. In the 5th stage on the climb to Jaca, she made a big impression.

Vollering: "I felt very strong this whole year. I was on the podium several times, but victory remained out. It took a long time this year for me to win. I am happy that I was able to show it here now. This is also my first victory in the red, white and blue champion's jersey of the Netherlands. Last year I did win races while I was Dutch champion, but then I always wore the leader's jersey in the WorldTour. Now I finally have my finish picture in the red-white-blue."

"On the final climb I felt good, so I set the pace myself. I noticed that Elisa Longo Borghini was struggling, so I accelerated even more in the hope of gaining time on her. That plan worked well. Winning La Vuelta Femenina is my big goal and I am happy to already have this beautiful red leader's jersey around my shoulders. I hope we can make it a few more nice days here with the team and defend my position. The fact that I am already 31 seconds ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini is a good starting point."
