Anna van der Breggen won a well-deserved silver medal at the World Time Trial Championships. Van der Breggen competed in a World Time Trial Championships for the first time since winning the world title in Imola (2020). The 35-year-old Dutch cyclist set a top time. Only Marlen Reusser completed the 31.2 kilometres even faster. ‘I had doubts about participating, but national coach Laurens Ten Dam convinced me. This silver medal in my comeback year is very nice,’ said Anna van der Breggen.

Anna van der Breggen: ‘I didn't expect this beforehand, but I was hoping for a podium place. The difference with Marlen was 51 seconds. You cannot make up this much time in just one moment in the race, so this is a very nice silver medal. I paced myself well and didn't expect to finish second.’

‘It was tough and I started quite cautiously, but I was able to ride steadily and maintain this throughout the entire time trial. Except during that cobbled climb, which was so tough at the end. Everyone was exhausted there, except Marlen,’ said a smiling Anna van der Breggen.

‘I hesitated for a long time about whether to do the time trial, but Laurens Ten Dam persuaded me to give it a try,’ said Van der Breggen. ‘I know how much time and pain it takes to prepare for this, but the course was very beautiful. If you go for it, you have to give it 100%, otherwise you shouldn't do time trials. But in hindsight, I'm very happy I did it. It resulted in a beautiful silver medal.’

"This silver is definitely the icing on the cake of my comeback year, but there is still an important race on the programme. The road race will also be extremely tough. The altitude and heat will make it different from other world championships I have participated in. But we will do our very best to achieve a good result there too with Team NL."
