Mischa Bredewold has finished Itzulia Women in second place. In the final stage, Bredewold rode a particularly strong race in the leader's jersey, but Demi Vollering proved to be a class better uphill. With two stage wins and Bredewold's second place in the overall classification, Team SD Worx-Protime can look back on a good round. Especially after the team saw classification rider Anna van der Breggen drop out after a crash.

‘We knew it was going to be difficult,’ Bredewold told in the flash interview in San Sebastian. ‘It's no secret that we needed a miracle to defend the leader's jersey. I had a very good day, but on the long climbs, Demi Vollering is on another level at the moment. I think I shouldn't be disappointed with second place in the general classification.’

Bredewold is having a strong season. She already won a stage in the Valencia and triumphed handsomely in the Amstel Gold Race. In the first two stages of Itzulia Women, she was a class act. In the tough final stage including the Jaizkebel climb, she finished sixth. Only Vollering was able to escape from the first bunch.

Bredewold: ‘In this race it was also a special experience to be the leader of the team. How the other girls worked for me was very special. It even makes me a bit emotional. We did everything we could to still win the round, but we can be very satisfied with second place. That was the highest we could achieve. I think we can look back on how we rode as a team with great satisfaction. For me, this is also another new step.’
