"Hat-trick would be nice"

In the first stage of RideLondon, Lorena Wiebes struck straight away. The 25-year-old Dutch proved once again to be the fastest of the peloton, winning by several bike lengths in Colchester. ‘My teammates had controlled the whole day. It only gave me more motivation to finish. This tastes like more,’ said Lorena Wiebes.

Lorena Wiebes: ‘I'm happy I managed to finish it in the sprint. We were in control all day. Femke Markus and Christine Majerus did a great job to keep the breakaway from getting too far away. After that, I was brought in perfectly. So I was not allowed to fail. This was almost the perfect race from us. Whether I will go for three in a row again here in RideLondon? A hat-trick would be nice, yes.’

Team manager Lars Boom. ‘The rest is not in the picture, this was a rock-solid sprint by Lorena. This must give her a nice feeling. I am satisfied with the team's work. In itself it was a long boring ride, but we had to stay attentive with the two riders in front. Christine Majerus and Femke Markus rode in the lead for a whole day to keep the difference to a maximum of two minutes. In the end, we perhaps caught them back just a little too quickly, after which the peloton went wild as the final began. When two riders escaped again, Femke and Christine again took the initiative to catch them back. It is logical that the other teams look to us to control, because we have the strongest sprinter in our team.’

‘The lead-out also ran smoothly. Lotte Kopecky was suddenly on the other side with two kilometres to go, but it was impressive how she found back Barbara Guarischi and Lorena Wiebes and joined them and then gave Lorena a perfect lead-out. That radiates motivation. We are ready to battle and want to stay in control tomorrow as well,’ Boom concluded.
