Preview with title defender Demi Vollering before Tour de Romandie

‘I am aiming for the overall win again’

02/09/2024

Demi Vollering hopes to win the overall classification this season too after her overall win at last year's Tour de Romandie. To do so, she finds a course tailored to her needs. She will have support from world champion Lotte Kopecky, Christine Majerus, Niamh Fisher-Black, Femke Markus and Femke Gerritse. ‘I hope the upcoming races in Switzerland will be special. This has become my second homeland. The Tour de Romandie seems like the ideal preparation for the world championships in Zurich, which is my last main goal of the season.’

Demi Vollering: ‘I recovered nicely mentally from the Tour de France Femmes. Looking back, I still have some mixed feelings because I came so close to the final victory. The pride still prevails that I was still able to win the last stage with arrival on top of the mythical Alpe D'Huez. After the Tour I rested for a while and in the meantime I finished some tough training sessions with an eye on the final part of the season.’

‘With the Tour de Romandie, a new opportunity presents itself. Of course I would like to go for the overall win. It is a beautiful race with stages that should suit me. There's a lot of climbing. We are going to Switzerland with a strong team, so we will be able to play the team game. The fact that Lotte Kopecky is also there means that the other teams have another dangerous rider to keep an eye on.’

‘I'm also riding this race in function of the World Championships. Otherwise it would be a very long period without a race between the Tour de France and the World Championships. The Tour de Romandie will be a good gauge of value towards the World Championships in Zurich. That is my last big goal of this season. It would be very nice to be able to become world champion in Switzerland. It is quite a tough course and it is a championship. Those are always tough races that are hard to predict. The only thing you can do yourself is to arrive at the start in the best possible shape. My last training sessions already went well. I hope to add the final percentages to that in the Tour de Romandie.’
