‘We are on track for the final podium’

In the first mountain stage of the Vuelta Femenina, Anna van der Breggen finished third. The 35-year-old Dutch rider rode pace in the closing kilometres of the Lagunas De Neila stage, before she could not answer an attack by Demi Vollering. At her own pace, she then rode a strong climb to finish third. In the general classification, she is now 45 seconds behind new leader Vollering. ‘Surely there is satisfaction. Of course you hope Anna would be able to follow, but somewhere this was to be expected,’ said sport director Christian Kos.

Sport director Christian Kos: ‘Beforehand we had said we would be happy should we reach the final podium. That was the set goal and so in halfway through the Vuelta we are on track. Anna van der Breggen has more than proved that she can compete for a good classification. We didn't really know what to expect going into this Vuelta, how her form would compare to the others. Then when we see how she rode today in the mountain stage, there is satisfaction.’

‘But of course there was hope that there was more in it. On the other hand, if you know where Anna is coming from, this is a great result. As a team, we have already had wonderful days in this Vuelta Femenina in which we took two nice victories and we are second in the general classification. So it is going super. Which stage should we expect on Friday? It could go either way, but either way there will be a sprint. Be it with a small group or with the peloton. Reasonable time gaps have already been made, so who knows if a group will get in front and sprint for the win.’
