Mischa Bredewold comes narrowly second in exciting final sprint with Marianne Vos

‘The jump made the difference’

The sixth stage of the Vuelta Femenina ended with the expected bunch sprint. There was quite a lot of activity in between, but each time the attempts were caught back by a chasing peloton. Mischa Bredewold then entered the sprint and only had to give way on the line to Marianne Vos, who won by a tyre-thick difference. ‘This one was very close,’ said sport director Christian Kos.

Sport director Christian Kos: "This was a great day for us. Too bad we really only narrowly missed out on victory. At one point, a front group of 11 rode away, including Elena Cecchini and Femke Markus. It was a nice group to have up front and the lead increased to a minute and a half, but Visma-Lease a Bike & FDJ-Suez led the chase in the peloton, with some other teams after that."

"The last 20 kilometres were marked by a hill zone, with Liane Lippert, Marianne Vos and Mischa Bredewold separating. That was a fine situation for us, because we were planning to sprint with Mischa anyway. Then she had fewer riders to sprint against. But that didn't go through either, after which the full focus went to the sprint."

"In the sprint, Mischa Bredewold does everything very well, but Marianne Vos did them just that little bit better. It was very close on the line. Marianne Vos' jump was better and so she wins by a tyre length difference. With the exception of one stage, we have been on the podium every day. So this Vuelta is going well for us. Tomorrow could be the icing on the cake if we manage to secure the final podium with Anna van der Breggen."
