At the Track Cycling World Championships in Santiago de Chile, Lorena Wiebes successfully defended her world title in the scratch race. In a fast-paced final, she had to dig deep in the closing meters to overtake Amalie Dideriksen. The 26-year-old Dutch rider claimed her second rainbow jersey in just twelve days, having already won the gravel world title earlier in Maastricht.

“It was pretty close,” Wiebes said. “Luckily, I was able to time my sprint well and follow myself up as world champion.”

Lorena Wiebes: “I’m super happy to be back on the top step of the podium. I was determined to defend my title, but it was a tight race. With four laps to go, I had a moment where I thought: I’m not sure if I can still make it. But I kept believing.”

“I’m more used to the track compared to last year. Still, my positioning in those final four laps wasn’t ideal. Fortunately, another rider also had to move up, and I was able to use her slipstream. I had to time my sprint perfectly, and that allowed me to pass Amalie Dideriksen in the final meters.”

“Is it easy to switch from gravel to track? Both disciplines are about suffering, but it’s a completely different kind of suffering than gravel. I’m glad I was able to switch quickly and that I managed to win the scratch world title again.”
