This Saturday, the Copenhagen Sprint is on the agenda. After a successful first edition last year, the women’s peloton returns to the Danish capital for a race that, on paper, looks tailor-made for the fast women. Lorena Wiebes, winner of the first edition in 2025, will line up once again and heads to Denmark with confidence and motivation.
Wiebes is clearly looking forward to the race.
“I’m really looking forward to it and I’m extra motivated to prove myself again after everything that has happened in recent weeks. It’s called the Copenhagen Sprint, so of course we’re expecting a sprint,” Wiebes said with a smile.
“Last year was the first edition, so it’s still quite a new race on the calendar. It’s a difficult race, but also a beautiful one. For me as a sprinter, it’s an ideal opportunity to go up against the other top sprinters and prove myself. It’s a long race, with several local laps in the city centre at the end. Those can be quite hectic, so it’s definitely important to stay alert.
We’ve brought the perfect sprint train, a team that is really built for this race. We have the ideal riders to approach this race in the right way. We are definitely going for two out of two. We’ll be on the start line with the goal of winning.”
Sports director Christian Kos is also looking forward to the race, which carries extra personal meaning for him.
“I’m really looking forward to it. It feels a bit like coming home, because Copenhagen is a beautiful city where my mother comes from. I have a lot of great holiday memories here, and I’ve always enjoyed riding my bike in Denmark,” said Kos.
“Last year was a great first edition, with a fantastic sprint from Lorena. It would be wonderful to go home with the win again on Saturday.”
Although the Copenhagen Sprint is often labelled a sprinters’ race, Kos still sees several potential pitfalls.
“Denmark is always a bit rolling: it’s not completely flat, but it’s not a climbing race either. So we mustn’t be caught off guard and we need to stay alert to how the race develops.
A lot of teams will approach this race with the intention of sprinting. The danger is that a breakaway group gets too much of a lead, or that at some point you have to chase the breakaway yourself. So we need to stay attentive and assess how we can take control of the race. Maybe by sending one of our own riders into the break.”
Still, the main objective remains clear.
“With Lorena, we obviously want to work towards a sprint. She is highly motivated to show what she’s worth again after last week.
We are bringing a team that can both control the race and race aggressively. We’ll see how things unfold, but in any case we have the riders to respond to different race situations.”
The weather may also become an important factor.
“The forecast says it might rain. If you then have to go through the city centre with a big peloton, it can become quite dangerous. So it’s up to us to protect Lorena as good as possible.”
