“It’s wonderful to win in the leader’s jersey”

There was once again no match for Lorena Wiebes in the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes. Wearing the yellow jersey, she finished off the work of her teammates in magnificent fashion by sprinting to victory in Geneva. It marked a second consecutive stage win for Lorena Wiebes and Team SD Worx-Protime in this Tour de France Femmes. "This is a dream start."

Lorena Wiebes: “This victory belongs to my teammates, who worked incredibly hard for it. Riejanne Markus was incredibly strong, and we had to pull out all the stops to bring her back. My teammates had to do a huge amount of work at the front to make this win possible. Everyone contributed to it. Normally, Lotte Kopecky would be my lead-out, but we also had to use her in the chase because we needed everyone. So I definitely felt the pressure to finish it off.

As a result, I was on my own in the sprint. However, I found the right wheels and was able to launch my sprint with 200 metres to go. Winning while wearing the yellow jersey is fantastic. Sprinting remains nerve-racking for me. One small mistake and all of your team’s hard work is wasted. It can be very stressful.”

Danny Stam: “It was a nerve-racking finale. We had predicted this scenario and knew that all eyes would be on us. The other teams waited as long as possible, expecting us to do the hard work. And that’s exactly what we did. At one point, even our team leader Anna van der Breggen took some turns at the front on her own initiative. But there was still one more card to play: Wiebes. This is a fantastic start to the Tour de France. Anything extra from here on is a bonus.”
