"A perfect score so far"
Once again, no one could match Lorena Wiebes in the second stage of the Tour of Chongming Island. After a day full of attacks, during which Team SD Worx-Protime remained firmly in control, the stage came down to another bunch sprint. Lara Gillespie challenged Wiebes in the final meters, but Wiebes once again proved to be the fastest rider in the peloton. Two wins out of two, and the yellow jersey sits even more firmly on her shoulders. “It was another great day. Of course, we want to secure the overall victory tomorrow,” said Christian Kos.
Christian Kos: “It was a day full of breakaway attempts, but we were always well represented and in control of the race. Midway through the stage, a dangerous breakaway went clear, but with Femke Gerritse and Femke Markus we had two riders up front. It didn’t guarantee that we would keep the yellow jersey, but it did put us in a very comfortable position. If the breakaway was caught, we could sprint for the stage win with Lorena Wiebes and keep the yellow jersey. If the break stayed away, we had a fresh Femke Gerritse who could go for the stage victory herself. With fifteen kilometers to go, everything came back together.”
“And so the focus shifted to the finish. After a very strong lead-out by Barbara Guarischi, it became a hard-fought sprint between Lorena and Lara Gillespie. But Lorena once again proved to be the fastest. The first two stages have gone perfectly. We head into the final stage with a satisfied feeling and will do everything we can to finish the job tomorrow,” Kos added.
