“Happy with this victory”

Marie Schreiber has started the new cyclocross season like a rocket. The Luxembourg champion took her fourth win of the season at the Nacht van Woerden. Just as in the HG Cross in Meulebeke, Schreiber paced her race well. With 2.5 laps to go, she accelerated. No one could follow her in the pouring rain, and Schreiber came home solo. “I made the difference with my strength.”

Marie Schreiber: “This was a good race for me. It was lightning fast from the start. I started well, but Inge van der Heijden took over and set a high pace. She surprised me with that, so I had to follow. After two laps I changed tires, because it was raining. The course changed as a result and I needed more grip.”

“That gave me more confidence in the corners. Just like in Meulebeke, I tried to pace myself well. Halfway through the race I was able to put my power down. With 2.5 laps to go I moved to the front, accelerated and created a gap.”

“After that I tried to stay in control. In the last lap I had a sort of small crash. You couldn’t see well in the darkness. Because of the pouring rain, the course was changing constantly. A line that was fine a lap earlier could suddenly no longer be okay. I hadn’t seen it in the dark. Fortunately, I was still able to hold on to the gap and secure the win.”

“This is a nice win. I felt good today. Some riders may be technically a bit better, but just like in the HG Cross in Meulebeke, I was able to make the difference with my power. I’m drawing extra confidence from this,” said Schreiber.
